Southern Maryland Blue Crabs manager Patrick Osborn announced three additional signings to the 2013 roster today. Pitchers Eddie Morlan and Charlie Manning will again join the Blue Crabs, as well as newly acquired outfielder Sean Smith for the 2013 season.

Morlan will return to the Blue Crabs for a third consecutive season after recording a 3-2 record and a 1.76 ERA in 46 innings of relief work in 43 games during 2012. His 1.76 ERA last season led Southern Maryland relievers and was a career-best for Morlan since starting his career in 2004.

The 26 year-old, right-hander is currently the youngest player signed to the Blue Crabs roster and has registered a 35-26 lifetime record in 306 games and 551.2 innings pitched. Morlan also boasts a 3.02 career-ERA in seven years of minor league service.

The La Habana, Cuba native was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the third round of the 2004 MLB June Amateur Draft and has reached as high as Double-A playing for the New Britain Rock Cats of the Eastern League and the Montgomery Biscuits, Huntsville Stars and Mississippi Braves of the Southern League (2007-11).

Left-handed pitcher Manning also rejoins the team for his third straight year after leading all Blue Crabs Pitchers and tying for sixth among all Atlantic League pitchers in games played (56) during the 2012 season.

Manning, 33, finished last season with a 5-6 record and a 2.49 ERA in 65 innings of relief. His ERA, innings pitched and strikeouts (60) were all good for sixth among Blue Crabs pitchers in 2012.

Entering his 11th season of professional baseball, the Winter Haven, Florida, native was last drafted by the New York Yankees in the ninth round of the June Amateur Draft in 2001.

Newly added Smith will play his first season with Southern Maryland in 2013 after splitting time throughout the Independent League’s American Association with the Gary SouthShore RailCats, Lincoln Saltdogs and Wichita Wingnuts.

During his stints with each team, the outfielder compiled a combined .268 batting average in 60 games. Smith also chipped in 61 hits, 34 runs, 22 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. Through 13 seasons the 33 year-old has appeared in 953 career games and has a .260 average through 3,942 lifetime at bats.

After signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 15th round of the 2000 MLB June Amateur Draft, Smith reached Double-A Birmingham with the Barons of the Southern League for one season (2007) as well as splitting his time across the Independent League.
