The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have announced the official signing of former Major League outfielder Jason Lane. Lane spent parts of six seasons in the Majors, predominately with the Houston Astros, and last appeared in the big leagues in 2007 in three games with the San Diego Padres after playing in 68 for Houston that year.

In 2005, Lane was the starting right fielder for the Astros during the World Series against the Chicago White Sox. In Game 3, he hit a solo home run and had two RBI. He is the second player added to the Blue Crabs roster this season with World Series experience. Relief pitcher Ryan Speier pitched out of the Colorado Rockies bullpen in Game 1 of the 2007 World Series against the Boston Red Sox.

Lane spent all of 2005 with the Astros, hitting .267 with 26 home runs and 78 RBI in a career high 145 games.

Lane began this season in the Florida Marlins organization at Triple-A New Orleans where he played in 47 games and hit .229 with three home runs and 14 RBI. Last season he was with Triple-A Las Vegas, an affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. In 113 games, Lane batted .253 with 13 home runs and 47 RBI for Las Vegas after splitting the 2008 season between the Triple-A clubs of the Yankees and Red Sox, at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Pawtucket respectively.

In 71 games in the Majors in 2007, Lane hit eight home runs and drove in 27 runs. In six Major League seasons, Lane owns a .241 average with 61 homers and 189 RBI.

This will be Lane’s first appearance in the Atlantic League. A veteran of 11 professional seasons, he was drafted by Houston in 1999, debuting in the Majors with the Astros in 2002. Lane brings a career .269 average with 201 home runs and 771 RBI combined in his Major and minor league career to the Blue Crabs.
