Reo Speedwagon To Perform First-ever Concert At New Ballpark On August 11
With the inaugural baseball game at Regency Furniture Stadium exactly one week from today, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have announced that rock legends REO Speedwagon will perform the first-ever major concert at the new, multi-purpose entertainment facility on Monday, August 11. Tickets will go on sale to Blue Crabs season ticket and mini-plan holder’s ONLY beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 via the team’s website, www.SOMDbluecrabs.com.
Tickets to the general public will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17. All tickets are general admission and will be $25 during the season-ticket holder, online pre-sale (May 10-16) and $30 beginning on May 17, when tickets can also be purchased at the Regency Furniture Stadium box office, or by calling 301-638-9788. Blue Crabs season ticket holders will also be granted early admission to the general admission-only show. Gate opening times will be announced at a later date. The stage for the concert will be located behind second base, with standing room general admission on the playing field, in addition to the seating bowl.
The band, renowned for such hits as “Take It On The Run,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling” and “Keep on Loving You” is expected to be the first of many similar concerts and events at the new ballpark, which will open on May 2. REO’s most successful album, “Hi Infidelity” was released in 1980 and went on to become the biggest selling rock LP of 1981. Six songs from the album hit the billboard charts, including “Keep on Loving You,” which was their first number one hit.
“The willingness of a group the caliber of REO Speedwagon to agree to play at this ballpark so early in our life cycle speaks volumes about the high expectations for this facility,” Blue Crabs Owner and Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson said. “Really, we’ve just begun to scratch the surface of what this ballpark can mean to the entire Southern Maryland region.”
Last April, REO Speedwagon released its first studio collection of new material in more than a decade, “Find Your Own Way Home.” It is their 15th album since the band debuted in 1971. The August 7 concert at Regency Furniture Stadium is part of a worldwide tour that will take the band to over 20 states, along with Ireland, England, Switzerland and Germany this summer. The band has toured every year since its inception in 1971.
“These are the people who supported our music from the beginning. This is REO country,” says Kevin Cronin (lead vocals, guitar), describing the fans who enthusiastically sing along every night to the songs he has written.
The roots of the new album go back to the spring of 2000, when the band joined forces with fellow Midwest rockers, Styx, for a national, sold-out, co-headlining tour. The tour proved to be such a commercial success that it was recorded live and released on both CD and DVD, jokingly entitled “Arch Allies”. The bands appeared together on the Today show, VH1, and on numerous syndicated radio shows, including The Howard Stern Show.
Cronin, along with fellow band members Bruce Hall (bass), Neal Doughty (keyboards), Dave Amato (lead guitar) and Bryan Hitt (drums) are ready to roll into Southern Maryland later this summer for what promises to be an entertaining night of rock and roll music.
“We love to play live,” says Hall. “It just keeps getting better.”
The Blue Crabs inaugural baseball season at Regency Furniture Stadium begins on Friday, May 2 with a 7:05 game against the Lancaster Barnstormers. Individual game tickets, season tickets packages and group events are now available through the team’s website at www.SOMDbluecrabs.com, or by calling 301-638-9788.
