(York, PA., Aug. 4, 2018) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (8-14) lost against the York Revolution (11-12) 8-4, with York holding on to their early lead throughout.
After a scoreless first inning started the night, the Revs struck first in the bottom of the second inning. After a groundout started the inning, Jared Mitchell doubled for the first hit of the night for either side. A groundout moved him up to third, setting him up to score two batters later on a wild pitch from Paul Clemens (1-7).
The Blue Crabs offense responded right away, tying things up with a run in the third. Teodoro Martinez singled with one out in the inning, moving first-to-third on a single from Edwin Garcia. Garcia then stole second during the next at-bat, which allowed Martinez to score on the throw down.
The tie didn’t last long, as York bounced back to put up three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Alonzo Harris led things off with a walk, stealing second before moving up to third on a groundout. A sacrifice fly from Melky Mesa brought Harris home, which was followed by another solo homerun from Telvin Nash. Welington Dotel singled behind that, before three straight walks brought him all the way home to extend the lead to 4-1.
Harris led off the next inning with another walk, stealing both second and third before scoring on a groundout from Mesa. Mitch Atkins (8-4) was strong on the mound behind the offense, holding strong to the four-run advantage. The right-hander allowed just one run on four hits through his first five innings but found trouble in the top of the sixth.
Atkins started the inning with a strikeout, then Jon Griffin reached first on an error by the third baseman. After another strikeout from Atkins, Angelo Songco launched a two-run homerun to cut into the deficit. Songco’s second homerun of the season brought the Blue Crabs within two, taking a 5-3 score into the seventh.
The Revs turned to their bullpen in the seventh, as Atkins handed his two-run lead to Ricardo Gomez. Gomez allowed back-to-back singles, before walking Martinez to load the bases with still nobody out. Junior Rincon was then brought in to try to get out of the jam, and he immediately forced a double play from Garcia. Craig Maddox did score on the play but the two outs allowed another groundout to retire the side and limit the damage to just one run.
York’s offense responded once again, putting up two of their own in the bottom half of the frame. A walk to Nash got things going, with Nash advancing to second on a wild pitch and third on a Dotel groundout. A sacrifice fly from Mitchell brought him home, with a two-out single from Roger Diaz extended the inning further. Diaz swiped second to get in scoring position, which would allow him to score on a Ryan Dent single and put the Revs lead at 7-4.
Rincon returned to the mound for a scoreless eighth inning, before York added another when Casilla scored on an error. York sent their closer, Grant Sides, to the mound in the ninth, where he struck out the side in order to finish off the 8-4 win.
The Blue Crabs return to action Sunday, August 5th for the series finale against the Revolution. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 P.M. on Sunday at PeoplesBank Ballpark.
