(Sugar Land, TX., Aug. 28, 2018) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (16-28) dropped the series opener against the Sugar Land Skeeters (31-14) 4-2.
After a pair of scoreless innings started the night, the Blue Crabs opened the scoring with one in the third. Jose Gonzalez singled to open the inning, moving to second on a flyball from Ryan Strausborger two batters later. Edwin Garcia singled after that, bringing Gonzalez home from second to get the scoring started.
Southern Maryland added another in the fifth, pushing their lead further. Gonzalez got things going again, this time with a leadoff double. A single from Francisco Rosario moved Gonzalez to third, allowing him to score on a Strausborger sacrifice fly, making the score 2-0.
Delgado was stellar through the first five innings, allowing just one hit while picking up four strikeouts. The Skeeters finally got on the board in the sixth, putting up a pair of runs in the inning. After two quick outs started the frame, Barrett Barnes singled to extend the inning. Anthony Giansanti followed that with a two-run homerun, tying things up at 2-2.
Both Delgado and James Russell went seven strong innings, exiting the game heading into the eighth. After a scoreless top half of the inning, Sugar Land grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back singles started the inning, with a sacrifice bunt moving both runners to scoring position. Barnes then doubled, bringing home Luke Dykstra and Daniel Robertson to grab a 4-2 lead.
The two-run advantage was handed over to closer Felipe Paulino (S,29) to finish off the game. The All-Star reliever worked a 1-2-3 inning, closing out the 4-2 win in the series opener and pushing the Blue Crabs losing streak to seven games.
The Blue Crabs return to action Wednesday, August 29th for the second game in the series against the Sugar Land Skeeters. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. on Wednesday at Constellation Field.
