Waldorf, MD. – In a series in which pitching has been dominate, game three of a four game set turned in a different direction. The Blue Crabs’ bats propelled them to a 5-3 victory over the Long Island Ducks on Wednesday morning, and the scoring started right out of the gates.
It didn’t take long for Brandon Cumpton (W, 1-2) to get run support, as in the bottom of the first inning the Blue Crabs struck with a three spot.
Tony Thomas has been a force over the course of the Blue Crabs’ current homestand, and it rolled into today with yet another RBI, giving him half of the team’s RBI in this series. After the Blue Crabs plated one more, Edwin Garcia came through with a single with two outs, scoring Thomas, pushing the Blue Crabs’ lead to three.
Cumpton allowed a trio of runs in six innings work, but the Southern Maryland offense kept on, matching the Ducks nearly every step of the way.
Following a Steve Lombardozzi RBI double in the top of the third, the Blue Crabs’ Rubi Silva answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. The next time the Ducks scored, the Blue Crabs responded once again, this time with a Cory Vaughn RBI double, putting the scoring tally at 5-2 through five innings played.
Despite the Ducks tacking on one more run in the top of the sixth, their comeback efforts fell short thanks to a quality start from Cumpton, and an electrifying display from the Southern Maryland bullpen. The triple-headed monster of Adam Choplick, Kevin Munson, and Mat Latos (S,2) strung together three scoreless innings, starving the Ducks of any offense.
Southern Maryland controls the series following a 5-3 win over the Long Island Ducks, having snagged two of the first three heading into the finale tomorrow.
The Blue Crabs vs. Ducks series finale is tomorrow, May 16th, at Regency Furniture Stadium, with the first pitch at 10:35 AM.
