FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 13, 2019
Following a rain delay that lasted more than two hours, Tommy Thorpe made his third start of the season in the final game of an eight-game homestand. Thorpe ran into some trouble in the first inning, as he allowed a leadoff double to Alexi Amarista. After a walk issued to Taylor Motter, Jason Rogers scorched a double into left field, scoring Amarista and Motter, giving Bees a 2-0 lead.
The game remained that way until the bottom of the third inning. Kent Blackstone started the scoring for the Blue Crabs with an RBI single, driving in Tony Thomas. After Joe Benson singled, Jose Julio Ruiz ripped a line drive into right field, knotting the score at 2-2. The next batter, Cory Vaughn, blasted a three-run home run to left field, putting the good guys up 5-2.
Following a strong four-inning performance from Tommy Thorpe, the Blue Crabs went to Ryan Chaffee (W, 2-4). The right-hander struggled in the top of the fifth, giving up a solo home run on the first pitch of his outing. Chaffee then surrendered a double to Darren Ford before Amarista homered to tie the contest at 5-5. Chaffee then settled down pitching two innings.
But the Blue Crabs battled back from there. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth Vaughn scored from third base on a wild pitch, and would come through again in the seventh inning with an RBI double to give Southern Maryland a 7-5 advantage.
Going into the top of the ninth inning, the Blue Crabs held a 9-6 lead and turned to Mat Latos (S, 6). The closer threw only four pitches, retiring the Bees in order, marking the sixth consecutive “1-2-3” inning pitched by Latos.
The Blue Crabs will return home on June 21th for the first game of six game homestand that will begin against the High Point Rockers with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
