Blue Crabs Win Fifth Straight
Waldorf, MD – Southern Maryland came into tonight’s game looking to extend their win streak to a season-high five consecutive games. After the offense was quiet in the first five innings, the Blue Crabs’ bats came alive and put up seven runs in the final three innings of the game en route to a 7-2 win.
Michael Kelly had a terrific start for the Blue Crabs. While Kelly allowed a baserunner in each of the first two innings, he kept the Barnstormers off the board. He continued his excellent effort, pitching 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth innings.
It was a brisk first half of the game, as the first four and a half innings of play took just one hour and ten minutes.
The next half of the contest would take a total of two hours and thirty-seven minutes. Kelly would exit the sixth inning with the bases loaded, the same frame that he allowed his lone earned run of the contest.
James Dykstra (W, 3-1) came in place of Kelly and worked out of a one out bases loaded jam to keep the Barnstormers’ lead at bay, sitting at 1-0.
The Blue Crabs matched the ‘Stormers run in their half of the sixth, and after a scoreless Lancaster top of the seventh, the flood gates opened for Southern Maryland in the bottom of the seventh. The Blue Crabs plated a quartet of runs in the frame. Dean Green started off the outpouring of offense, extending his hit streak to eight games. Charlie Valerio and Josh McAdams kept it going, and Southern Maryland would exit the seventh inning holding a 5-1 advantage on the Lancaster reliever, Matt Marksberry (L, 4-4).
The Barnstormers tacked on one run in the top of the eighth before Southern Maryland tacked on a pair in the bottom of the eighth. Tony Thomas started it off with a triple that drove in a run, and Rubi Silva capped it off with a single to score another.
Southern Maryland won the contest by a score of 7-2, and has won five in a row while sitting on a 2-0 record in the second half.
The Blue Crabs will return home tomorrow, July 14th, for a game three of a three-game set with the Lancaster Barnstormers, and a 2:05 p.m. first pitch.
