(Waldorf, Md., May 11, 2018) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have added two more players to the 2018 roster, former MLB pitcher Paul Clemens and 2017 Atlantic League All-Star Angelo Songco.
The 30-year-old Clemens joins the Blue Crabs for his first year in the Atlantic League. The right-hander was originally selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 7thround of the 2008 MLB draft. The Louisburg College alum was traded to the Houston Astros organization during a breakout 2011 season, where he was named a Mid-Season All-Star.
Clemens made his MLB debut the following season, appearing in 35 games for the Houston Astros. He made 66 major league appearances across three seasons, two with Houston and one splitting 2016 between the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.
The utilityman Songco comes to Southern Maryland after an All-Star campaign in 2017 with the Long Island Ducks. He was a 4thround draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2009 after coming out of Loyola Marymount University. Songco also featured a breakout season in 2011, hitting .313 with 29 homeruns and 114 RBI’s. He earned Mid-Season, Post-Season, and Organization All-Star honors that season.
After three seasons in the American Association, Songco joined the Ducks for his Atlantic League debut in 2017. The 1B/OF hit .263 with 24 homeruns and 81 RBI’s for the league runners-up last season. He earned a trip to the Atlantic League All-Star Game in his first year in the league.
“We are always looking to get better and these two additions do just that for us,” said Manager James Frisbie. “Clemens has plenty of experience on the mound, facing some of the best guys in the world. Songco proved last year that he can hit in this league, and we’re hoping he can carry that momentum into this season.”
