Waldorf, MD. – The Blue Crabs came into a Tuesday night game against the New Britain Bees riding a season high four game win streak. All good things must come to an end though, as was the case for the Blue Crabs in game three of a five game series with the Bees as Southern Maryland would drop the contest by a score of 4-2.
The Bees swarmed the Blue Crabs early with the Southern Maryland southpaw, Brett Lee (L, 0-3) on the mound. Following an early walk and a base hit one batter later, New Britain’s MLB veteran Taylor Motter lifted a three-run home run over the mini monster in left field to put the Bees ahead by a 3-0 count heading into the bottom of the first inning.
The Blue Crabs responded immediately as Joe Benson stayed hot in his first homestand in a Blue Crabs uniform, roping an RBI double down the left field line to shave the Southern Maryland deficit to two runs. The Bees starter Kyle Simon (W, 1-3) would not allow any more Blue Crabs runs for the remainder of the inning, putting the scoring tally at a 3-1 New Britain lead.
Brett Lee’s start came to an end in the top of the third inning, exiting with no outs and runners on the corners. A fellow left-hander, Tommy Thorpe came in to stop the bleeding, and despite allowing one of Lee’s runners to score, the southpaw did a masterful job as he would strand the bases loaded to keep the score tight at a 4-1 Bees lead.
The Bees and the Blue Crabs traded scoreless frames through the majority of the middle innings. After both offenses raced out of the gates Simon and yet another Southern Maryland reliever, Ryan Chaffee, deterred the bats keeping the contest at a 4-1 score through two-thirds of a ballgame.
The scoring would continue to remain stagnant through the better part of the remainder of the contest until Cory Vaughn struck in the bottom of the ninth. Trailing by a trio of runs, Vaughn led off the final frame with his third home run in the last two days. That led to the end of the road for Simon, as Jim Fuller (S,5) would close the door on the Blue Crabs, securing a 4-2 Bees victory.
The Blue Crabs will return home tomorrow, June 11th for a game against the New Britain Bees, with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
