Blue Crabs Jack-Up the Speed, Ink former Astros Prospect Jackson Loftin to first player Contract of 2025
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs announce they have signed former Astros 13th round draft pick, 24-year-old, Jackson Loftin as their first player signing of 2025. Loftin had several stints in Triple-A for the Astros organization and played mainly at the Single to High-A level for the Astros.
The right hander hails from Spring, Texas, and spent three years at Sam Houston State, and his senior year at Oral Roberts collegiately. His Senior year he posted a .349 average, hitting 10 home runs and driving in 54. He walked more than he struck out and swiped 25 bases.
After being selected by the Astros in 2022, he spent three minor league seasons with them. Loftin played almost every position, making appearances at first base, second base, shortstop, third base, and all outfield positions while putting up massive stolen base numbers.
In 2023, Loftin stole 60 bases in Single-A Fayetteville, while also being called up to Triple-A Sugar Land for the first time that season. In his limited stint in Triple-A, he went (5-13) with three doubles and two RBI’s. In 2024, he again found himself in Triple-A Sugar Land, before returning to High-A Asheville. In High-A, he stole 20 more bases while being caught only twice.
Not only did his speed stand out, but his glove did as well. In his three minor league seasons at third base, he did not commit an error in 246.2 innings. When playing second base, he had a fielding percentage of .979 in three seasons.
After the Astros, Loftin made his way to the Staten Island FerryHawks. He played in 27 games, slashing .239 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in just over 100 at bats. His speed showed again with 11 stolen bases.
