The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs lost Tuesday night’s series opener against the Long Island Ducks 4-3.
Southern Maryland got an early lead in the second inning after a Brett Barrera two-out single to score Ethan Wilson from second. In the fourth, the Blue Crabs took a 2-0 lead when Barrera smacked his first home run of the season as he officially opens his bank account with Southern Maryland. It was then 3-0 after Jamari Baylor hit a no-doubter to left field in the sixth.
Right-handed starter Andrew Thurman tossed a gem. He went 5 2/3 innings and gave up just two runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out four Ducks batters before being relieved part way into the sixth inning. That was when the Ducks scored three runs on four consecutive hits to tie the ballgame at 3-3.
The Ducks later took the lead when Cody Thomas hit a solo blast off Cody Thompson in the eighth inning to make it 4-3.
Southern Maryland now falls to 17-17 on the season.
