The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs announce that pitcher Cody Thompson will be returning to the team for the 2025 season. After a strong showing in 2024, the 28-year-old right-hander Thompson re-signed after having the third best ERA on the staff in 2024 among qualified pitchers.

Thompson had a standout season last year in his first season in Southern Maryland, going (2-4) and posting a 3.80 ERA over 40 appearances. The Mechanicsville, Virginia native had 69 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched, which equated to a strikeout per nine of 9.4. Thompson’s consistency throughout the season led him to become one of the go-to relievers in the bullpen for Stan Cliburn.

“We’re thrilled to have Cody back with us for another season,” said Blue Crabs manager, Stan Cliburn. “His leadership in the bullpen and his ability to perform in high-pressure situations were huge for us last year. We’re confident that his return will help us compete at a high level in 2025.”

On June 15th against Charleston, Thompson recorded his only save on the season, pitching the last three innings to close out a 3-1 victory without allowing a run. Thompson went two or more innings in relief 16 times last season, and was heavily relied upon to get crucial outs late in games.

Before the Blue Crabs, Thompson pitched at Division Three Randolph Macon College, then turned professional and had several years in both the Pioneer and Frontier Leagues. It will be Thompson’s sixth professional season and second with the Crabs.

“I’m looking forward to coming back to Southern Maryland for another season with the Crabs! It’s exciting to come back to a team, a fan base, and a community that’s so close to home and is as supportive and welcoming as Waldorf. I am hoping we can make many more special memories together in 2025,” Thompson said.

Thompson is the first returner from the 2024 team, and third player signed to the 2025 roster.
