The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are bolstering their infield with two new player signings, 30-year-old right-handed shortstop Sam Dexter and versatile 24-year-old infielder Jamari Baylor.
Dexter, the right-handed shortstop was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2016 in the 23rd round. He spent two seasons in the minor leagues between Rookie ball and High-A. He then spent several seasons in the American Association while also playing winter ball in the Mexican Winter League in 2023-24. In 2023 for the Fargo Moorhead Redhawks, he played all 100 games, slashing .271, with seven home runs and 47 RBIs. He collected 100 hits while also smacking 20 doubles and four triples. He had similar production in 2024 for the RedHawks, playing 96 games and had 83 hits, four Homers and 48 RBIs to go along with 15 doubles. He has played over 600 games in independent ball and brings a wealth of experience to the Crabs. He carries a career average in independent ball of .264, 34 blasts and 294 RBIs. Dexter’s glove has been a strong point in his entire career. His career fielding percentage is at .980 while playing shortstop in 591 games and 2,708 chances. This will be Dexter’s 10th professional season and first in the ALPB.
Infielder Jamari Baylor was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the third round of the 2019 draft out of Benedictine College Prep in Richmond, Virginia. Baylor reached High-A with the Phils, playing every infield position with the organization. In 2021 in Rookie and Single-A, he batted .269 with five home runs and 21 RBIs with an .821 OPS. He showed more pop in Clearwater hitting six more bombs and drove in 28 with 22 steals. In May of 2023, he was involved in a cash deal to the Colorado Rockies, where he hit .333 in Single-A Fresno, blasting 7 homers in 33 games as well. Last season, Baylor started with the York Revolution but only played 15 games for them before having his contract purchased by the Toronto Blue Jays Organization. Baylor played 33 games after being signed in High-A. In York, Baylor hit .255, three home runs and 12 RBIs. After his stint with the Jays, he elected free agency. This will be Baylor’s sixth professional season and first with the Blue Crabs.
