Former Blue Crabs All-Star Closer Endrys Briceno Signed by the Los Angeles Angels
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs will need a new closer, as former three-time All-Star closer, 32-year-old Endrys Briceno was signed by the Angels Organization and is reporting to Triple-A Salt Lake City.
This will be a third stint in affiliated ball for him, he spent 2009-2018 with the Detroit Tigers, reaching High-A. He then came to Southern Maryland in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, Briceno signed a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks and pitched in double and triple-A, then returned to Southern Maryland this past season.
Briceno is one of the most decorated relievers the Blue Crabs have ever had, taking home three All-Star’s, a reliever of the year award in 2022, and also leading the ALPB in saves in 2024. In 2021, he posted a 1.87 ERA in over 57 innings. Then in 2022, he had his best campaign, winning the reliever of the year award and pitching to a miniscule 0.76 ERA, and struck out 73 in 47.2 innings. In 2024, he posted 84 strikeouts, the most in any season for him and led the league in saves.
The Blue Crabs now have two former players that will likely report to Triple-A in 2025, Endrys Briceno and Payton Eeles.
