(Saturday, May 27th, Long Island) The Blue Crabs and the Ducks faced off in a doubleheader Saturday, with McKenzie Mills pitching in game one and Mitch Lambson closing the day at the ballpark.
Game one started differently than the Blue Crabs would want it to. The Ducks hit three home runs combined, two in the second and one in the third. The Ducks were up 6-0 by the end of the third frame.
The Blue Crabs fought back and cut the lead in half, as Jack Sundberg scored on an error from the left fielder Brian Goodwin as he mishandled Michael Wielansky’s double. Braxton Lee and Jose Rosario both had RBI singles.
In the bottom of the fifth, Adeiny Hechavarria delivered an RBI triple down the right field line to make it a five-run game, and the Crabs would score two more themselves, but it wasn’t enough as the game ended in the scheduled seven innings as the Crabs fell 8-5.
But game two saw the script flipped from the first game of the doubleheader. K.C. Hobson drove in the first run with a blistered double down the line, Sundberg hit a 430-foot shot for three more runs, and Sundberg would cap off the four-run third as the Crabs had an 8-0 lead after three innings.
Long Island mounted a rally in the fifth, driving in a pair of runs. They loaded the bases in the eighth, but Isaac Mattson would strike out Dustin Woodcock and induce the inning-ending double play on Edward Salcedo.
The Crabs would tack on more for good measure in the eighth, as the final score was 9-2. The Blue Crabs tied back up for the top spot in the ALPB North Division as they are now 16-11 after a long Saturday.
Mitch Lambson continues his undefeated season; he moves to 5-0 after he went seven innings and allowed just two runs. He leads the Atlantic League with wins, and his season ERA is 2.56 in six starts.
This series's fourth and final game concludes Sunday, with the Pitcher of the Year, Daryl Thompson, pitching for Southern Maryland. The start time is 1:35, and you can tune in and cheer on the Blue Crabs by streaming it on FloSports.
