(Sunday, August 13th, Staten Island, New York) A new island, a new series. The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs traveled from Long Island after taking a series from the Ducks and prepared themselves to face off against the slugging Staten Island FerryHawks. Ian Kahaloa was making a start as the Crabs looked to pull away from the rest of the pack in the ALPB North.
The FerryHawks didn’t take long to score against the Blue Crabs ace, as Angel Aguilar drove in the first run with a double just two batters in, and an error allowed Aguilar to score after Yoshi Tsutsugo flew out to the left. It was 2-0 after just one inning.
Isaias Quiroz led off the second with his 15th home run of the year to draw even with K.C. Hobson for the team lead in that category. Khalil Lee tied the game in the next inning with a sharp single into right field, plating Jack Sundberg.
The FerryHawks then reclaimed the lead and never relinquished it. Three straight home runs from Chris Brito, Tsutsugo, and Aguilar put the FerryHawks up by three. Brandon Pugh hit the fourth home run for the Hawks in the fourth; three more runs would score after Kahaloa left the game with an injury.
Braxton Lee lined a ball into right-center, and the Crabs scored from his double, and they started to chip away. Hobson doubled later in the game, and Michael Baca would plate him with a ground ball to the shortstop.
After the 7th-inning stretch, the Hawks drove a steak through the heart of the Crabs with a five-run inning to pull away and win the game 14-6 to open the series with a win. The rest of the division would also drop their games, allowing the Crabs to remain in first place by half a game over York.
The Blue Crabs will get together with the FerryHawks on Sunday for a doubleheader. Game 1 is set to start around 1:00 PM, and Game 2 will be half an hour after the first game ends. The first-place Blue Crabs will be pitching Spencer Johnston for the first game, and McKenzie Mills will wrap up the double-dip.
